Separate the eggs. Mix sugar with egg yolks and vanilla sugar until very foamy.

Beat the egg whites until firm.

Sift the baking powder into the flour.

Stir oil and water alternately into the egg-sugar mixture. Then mix in the flour. Finally, carefully fold in the beaten egg whites.

Mix the cocoa with the amaretto.

Pour half of the cake mixture into a greased and floured baking pan. Mix the cocoa mixture into the other half and pour it into the mold as well. Using a wooden spoon, gently run it through the batter in a twisting motion to create the typical marble cake effect.

Finally, place the cherries on top and bake the cake at 180 °C for about 1 hour.
