For the cherry cookies, first preheat the oven to 170 °C top and bottom heat. Cover a baking tray with baking paper.

Wash the cherries, remove the stalks, pit them, quarter them and drain them well. Melt the butter in a saucepan, add the sugar with the syrup and let everything simmer briefly until the sugar has dissolved.

Mix the flour in a bowl with the baking powder, rolled oats, hazelnuts, ginger and salt. Pour in the butter and sugar mixture and mix well. Combine the cherries with the starch and mix in.

Divide the dough into 12 portions and roll each into a ball. Place the dough balls on the prepared baking sheet with enough space between them and press them flat. Bake in the oven for 20-22 minutes until golden brown by sight.

Remove, let the cookies cool on the tray for about 15 minutes, then transfer to cooling racks to cool. Arrange the cherry cookies on a plate and serve with fresh cherries or store in an airtight tin.
