For the rice balls in tomato sauce, cook the round grain or risotto rice according to package directions until soft (this may vary depending on the variety) and let cool.

In a bowl, knead the mince with the egg and the grated Grana Padano. Mix the rice into the mince, season with pepper and salt.Form small rice balls from the mixture with wet hands.Peel and finely dice the onion and garlic. Score tomatoes crosswise with a sharp knife, scald with boiling water and peel off the skin. Heat olive oil in a pan, sauté onion and garlic, then add diced tomatoes and sauté briefly. Add meat broth and season with salt and pepper.Place rice balls in the tomato sauce and put a lid on the pan. Simmer everything for about 10 minutes at medium temperature. Remove lid, turn rice balls and simmer uncovered for another 10 minutes. Just before serving, sprinkle basil over tomato sauce.
